Coimbra is the capital city of the District of Coimbra, and is part of the Coimbra Region sub-region (NUT III) and the Central Region (NUT II).
It is the seat of the Municipality of Coimbra, which has a total area of 319.40km2,[2] 140,796 inhabitants[3] in 2021 and a population density of 441 inhabitants/km2, subdivided into 18 parishes. This municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Mealhada, to the east by Penacova, Vila Nova de Poiares and Miranda do Corvo, to the south by Condeixa-a-Nova, to the west by Montemor-o-Velho and to the northwest by Cantanhede.
Coimbra is one of the oldest cities in Portugal and has a strong identity linked to education and culture, and has historically been recognised as a university city. This reputation is due, above all, to the presence of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe and one of the largest in Portugal. Founded in 1290 as Estudo Geral Português, on the initiative of D. Dinis, the university was initially established in Lisbon, alternating between the two cities until it was definitively established in Coimbra, on the banks of the Mondego River, in 1537.
In contemporary history, the student population of the University of Coimbra played a significant role in defending the ideals of freedom and democracy, and was an active force against the dictatorship of the Estado Novo.
In addition to its academic importance, Coimbra was also the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal until 1255, when this role was transferred to Lisbon. The city is home to the Monastery of Santa Cruz, where D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, is buried, and which was the country's first National Pantheon.
Coimbra is crossed by the Mondego River, which rises in the Serra da Estrela, in an east-west direction.
It is considered one of the most important Portuguese cities, due to the infrastructure, organizations and companies located there, as well as its historical importance and privileged geographical position in the center of mainland Portugal, between the cities of Lisbon and Porto. In terms of services offered, it is above all in education and health-related technologies that the city achieves greatest notoriety. The city's student population is around 37,000, some enrolled in non-polytechnic public higher education, some in polytechnic public higher education and some in private higher education.
The municipal holiday takes place on July 4, in memory of Queen Saint Isabel of Aragon, patron saint of the city known popularly simply as the Holy Queen. It was National Capital of Culture in 2003. On June 22, 2013, the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
